Virtual Worlds. S(t)imulating Creativity in decision making

چکیده
The significance of the earliest phase of decision making stems from the fact that decision makers 'frame' problems during this phase. These frames shape all subsequent decision making phases (Beach, 1997), fundamentally conditioning decision making outcomes (Daly et al., 2008). Avenues not considered at this stage are unlikely to be considered in the future (Adam, 2008). Further, decision making is most creative at these stages: there is a great deal of uncertainty at play but there are fewer constraints and there is less at stake. This paper argues that virtual worlds offer a potent combination of social, sensory and simulational capabilities that can stimulate creativity in decision making; and it also reports the findings of an investigation of the behavioural and cognitive aspects of creative decision making in Second Life®. The findings illustrate that Second Life users are faced with a kind of "tyranny of freedom": if anything is possible, where does one start? The answer appears to lie in a kind of "retrospective foresight" whereby decision makers draw upon prior experiences and use analogical reasoning to articulate metaphorical systems of thought.

Common weights for the evaluation of decision-making units with nonlinear virtual inputs and outputs
In this paper, by investigating the common weights concept and DEA models with nonlinear virtual inputs/outputs, we introduce a model for evaluating the decision making units with nonlinear virtual inputs and outputs based on the common weights.
متن کاملFostering Team Creativity in Virtual Worlds
This article addresses the potential of virtual worlds as a platform for creative team collaboration. The proliferation of geographically distributed teams, striving towards innovative results, calls for ICT that support team creativity. Three-dimensional virtual worlds represent such an emergent and rapidly developing collaboration tool. A systematic literature review was conducted to reveal t...

Social media are known for substantial creativity support, as they allow users exploring, creating, and sharing various types of content. Social 3D virtual worlds, such as Second Life, can also be seen as a social media that have wide possibilities for being creative. In this paper, we explore how 3D virtual worlds can support creativity in educational settings, including creativity of the coll...
متن کاملDecision Making in Virtual Worlds: An Experimental Test of Altruism, Fairness and Presence
Virtual worlds are gaining in popularity and are proposed as a test laboratory for the real world. In these virtual worlds users act via their avatars and make decisions for them. In this paper, we analyze the decision making in virtual worlds in an experiment conducted in a virtual world, as well as in the real world over the internet, for the same set of subjects. For this purpose, we develop...
متن کاملReal Decisions in Virtual Worlds: Team Collaboration and Decision Making in 3D Virtual Worlds
This study investigates how 3D virtual worlds (3DVWs) support team collaboration. Based on Media Synchronicity Theory, we pose that the shared environment and avatar-based interaction allowed by 3DVWs aid convergence processes in teams working on a decision making task, leading to increased shared understanding between team members. This increases performance of decision making teams. An experi...
